Scottie Scheffler wins American Express with mixed club setup

Scottie Scheffler secured his 20th PGA Tour victory at the American Express, relying on a blend of familiar and new equipment. The win marks a strong start to his season, highlighted by a return to trusted TaylorMade woods. Before turning 30, he joins Tiger Woods as the only player with 20 PGA Tour wins.

Scottie Scheffler dominated the field at the American Express, clinching the title on Sunday for his 20th PGA Tour triumph. This achievement places him alongside Tiger Woods as the sole players to reach that milestone before age 30. Scheffler's bag featured a mix of established performers and recent additions, reflecting his ongoing equipment tweaks.

He reverted to the TaylorMade Qi10 driver and 3-wood, clubs that powered 14 of his previous victories, after testing the newer Qi4D models at the Hero World Challenge. This decision underscores the comfort derived from success, as Scheffler noted in past adjustments, such as switching back to the Stealth 2 during the 2023 Hero en route to victory.

A notable change was the introduction of a Qi4D 7-wood, designed to bridge a distance gap. TaylorMade Tour rep Adrian Rietveld explained the customization: “We fit his 3-wood shorter, so it did not go further than his desired distance with that club, so when you fit a standard 5-wood, it goes too far. You don’t want to add loft to a 5-wood because it closes the face, so we built a 5-wood spec in a 7-wood head. It has the dynamics of a 5-wood but with the spin and launch conditions of a 7-wood to produce the carry number he wants with that club.” The club, lofted at 20 degrees, was bent more upright for better alignment.

Scheffler's TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck putter notched its 14th PGA Tour win, following Chris Gotterup's Sony Open success. Last season, Spider putters contributed to 15 Tour victories, nine from Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

His full setup includes a TaylorMade Qi10 driver (8.25° loft, Fujikura Ventus Black 7-X shaft), Qi10 3-wood (14.75°), Qi4D 7-wood (20°), Srixon ZU85 4-iron, TaylorMade P7TW irons (5-PW), Titleist Vokey wedges, and Titleist Pro V1 ball. This configuration propelled his runaway performance.
