Senegal routed 10-man Iraq 5-0 on June 26 to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the best third-placed teams.
Habib Diarra scored in the fourth minute at BMO Field in Toronto. Iraq defender Rebin Sulaka was sent off shortly after following a VAR review for pulling back Sadio Mane.
Ismaila Sarr added a third goal of the tournament in the 56th minute. Substitute Pape Gueye scored twice and Iliman Ndiaye completed the scoring with a long-range effort.
The result made Senegal the first African side to score five goals in a single World Cup match. Coach Pape Thiaw said the team managed the game well after adjustments at half-time.
Senegal sit fifth among third-placed teams with a plus-two goal difference. Qualification now depends on other results.
