The San Jose Sharks have signed forward Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract worth $28.75 million, with an average annual value of $5.75 million, beginning next season. The 30-year-old, acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in January, expressed gratitude for securing his future with the team. Sharks general manager Mike Grier highlighted Sherwood's value to the lineup.
The San Jose Sharks announced on March 4, 2026, that they have signed forward Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract extension valued at $28.75 million, carrying an average annual value of $5.75 million. The deal begins next season, preventing Sherwood from becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2026.
Sherwood, 30, was acquired by the Sharks from the Vancouver Canucks on January 19, 2026, in exchange for prospect Cole Clayton and second-round draft selections in 2026 and 2027. He made his debut with San Jose on February 4, 2026, against the Colorado Avalanche after recovering from an injury. In five games with the Sharks, Sherwood has recorded two points (one goal, one assist), including the game-winning goal on March 3 against the Montreal Canadiens. He leads the team in hits with 28 since joining.
Prior to the trade, Sherwood tallied 23 points (17 goals, six assists) in 44 games for the Canucks, leading the team in goals and ranking third in points. He was second in the NHL in hits with 210 at the time of the trade and has notched two hat tricks this season: on October 30, 2025, at St. Louis and December 19, 2025, at the New York Islanders.
Over eight NHL seasons with five teams—Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, and San Jose Sharks—Sherwood has amassed 123 points (61 goals, 62 assists) in 314 regular-season games. He previously signed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Canucks on July 1, 2024.
"It feels like it's been a whirlwind and a long time coming," Sherwood said, "but I'm just super grateful to be here and to be able to be part of someone's future is pretty special."
Sharks general manager Mike Grier stated, "We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building. The ingredients he brings to our lineup on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skillsets of his teammates and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come."
The Sharks, with a record of 30-25-4, trail the Seattle Kraken by three points for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, with one game in hand. Sherwood noted the team's competitive trajectory as a factor in his decision.
