An unexpected storm with strong wind gusts, hail and rain swept into Uppsala and Stockholm on Tuesday afternoon, May 26 2026. Several children from sailing schools ended up in the water and trees fell across roads and cars.
The weather shifted from sun to storm shortly after 5 pm. Wind gusts reached 25 meters per second at Arlanda and 24 meters per second in Uppsala according to SMHI. Sebastian Wigmo at the Swedish Maritime Administration's search and rescue center said many boats were affected at the same time.
At Resarö outside Vaxholm three boats with six children from a sailing school went missing. All wore life vests and were found within six minutes, with three in the water beside a capsized boat. A sailing school outside Nacka was also hit where children ended up in the water.
In Uppsala several trees fell, including near the central station. A girl under 15 in Visättra south of Stockholm injured her foot when a tree fell on her. No one needed hospital care according to police. Meteorologist Maria Svedestig explained that cumulonimbus clouds caused the strong winds.
