Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 draw to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
The match took place on Tuesday at BC Place in Vancouver. Ruben Vargas scored the decisive penalty after misses from Davinson Sanchez and Manuel Akanji, with Gregor Kobel saving from Cucho Hernandez.
Switzerland progressed despite missing injured forward Johan Manzambi. Colombia created several chances but could not score, including efforts from Gustavo Puerta and Jaminton Campaz.
The Swiss will face defending champions Argentina in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Kansas City. Murat Yakin’s side topped Group B and won their round of 32 tie against Algeria before this result.
Colombia had beaten Ghana in the previous round but lost on penalties for the second consecutive World Cup appearance in the last 16.
