Elon Musk announced that Tesla intends to release design and software materials for the Model S and Model X vehicles, following the approach used for the original Roadster.
Musk stated on July 24 that the company would make the materials available in the same manner as the Roadster release.
The Roadster effort, announced in November 2023, included five CAN database files, a diagnostic software ISO, and two PDF guides posted on GitHub. Additional documents appeared on Tesla’s service site behind a login.
Critics noted that the Roadster materials lacked CAD files, source code, mechanical drawings, and an open-source license. Tesla ended production of the Model S and Model X in April.
Musk’s statement indicates the S and X release remains a future step.
