Winter grips germany with persistent frost and spreading snow. From thursday, german weather service meteorologists warn of a strengthening storm low bringing heavy precipitation and gusty winds. Freezing rain with black ice threatens the south and west.
The german weather service (dwd) in offenbach reports that winter continues to grip germany tightly. In the night to wednesday, temperatures drop – except in the northwest – back into moderate frost. “In the south and the east german highlands, one must prepare again for severe frost, i.e., minimum values well below minus 10 degrees,” said dwd meteorologist tobias reinartz.
On wednesday daytime, snow is possible in the northwest and west. The snowfall spreads in weakened form across much of the country in the night to thursday. “It really gets exciting from thursday,” emphasized reinartz. Over the atlantic, a low is forming that will strengthen into a storm low. It will be west of ireland on thursday morning, over the netherlands by friday morning, and then move eastward over northern central germany.
From the night to friday, meteorologists expect gusty stormy winds, especially on the south side of the low in the center and south as well as on the coasts. “Associated with this is, from the night to friday, a gusty stormy wind,” said reinartz. Already on thursday, heavy precipitation will affect the southwest and west. In the north, it will be continuous snow, elsewhere the initial snowfall will increasingly turn into freezing rain with black ice formation.
On friday, maximum temperatures in the south and southwest will reach 5 to 9 degrees, causing thawing in the highlands. “Of course, there are still some uncertainties in the exact development, but it definitely looks like something is brewing,” warned the meteorologist. The warning is based on current forecasts from rnd/dpa.
