Whirlpool unveils top-load washer with built-in delicate basket

Whirlpool has introduced a new top-load washing machine featuring a built-in delicate basket designed to protect sweaters and other fragile items during regular wash cycles. The basket also helps keep socks together for easier sorting. The machine is set to launch in September at national retailers.

Whirlpool's latest top-load washing machine addresses common laundry frustrations by incorporating a simple plastic basket inside the drum. This built-in feature sits directly on top of the machine's impeller and shields delicate items, such as sweaters, from the agitation of a standard wash cycle. It also corrals socks in one place, simplifying the matching and folding process after washing.

The basket is large enough to hold a sweater along with multiple pairs of socks. According to a Whirlpool representative, items placed in the center basket stay in position throughout the cycle due to the machine's distinct water flow patterns. Users can easily remove the basket by squeezing its handles, or leave it out for loads that do not require it.

This innovation contrasts with similar offerings from competitors, like LG's sidekick pedestal washer, which uses a separate wash bin beneath the main drum. Whirlpool's approach integrates the basket directly into the primary machine for convenience.

The machine was displayed at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Orlando, where attendees could view the feature up close, though it was not demonstrated in operation. Pricing details remain unavailable, but the washer is scheduled for release at national retailers in September.

This development comes as a practical solution for those who have experienced damage to favorite garments from machine washing, potentially reducing the need for hand-washing or separate delicate cycles.
