Police arrested two bus drivers after a woman was gang-raped inside a private sleeper bus in Rani Bagh, New Delhi, late on May 11. The accused have been identified as Umesh Kumar and Ramender. An FIR has been filed and the vehicle seized as investigations continue.
The assault took place on a sleeper bus that usually travels from Delhi to Bihar. The woman met the two men as part of a monetary arrangement for sexual services but later refused to continue. Despite her withdrawal of consent, the accused assaulted her inside the vehicle.
CCTV footage showed the bus halting for more than an hour and a half near Nangloi railway station, close to the local police station. The woman got off around 2:30 am and called the PCR helpline using a phone belonging to one of the accused. She was taken to Nangloi police station where her statement was recorded.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Singh said the men had intended to pick up passengers that night but instead met the woman. Both accused were apprehended within hours, one at the spot and the other nearby. The police confirmed the FIR was registered after a medical examination.
