Xbox skips 2025 wrapped amid anniversary budget priorities

A new report indicates that Microsoft will not release an Xbox Wrapped summary for 2025, redirecting marketing funds to upcoming anniversaries. The decision comes during a challenging year for the Xbox brand, marked by layoffs and project cancellations. Meanwhile, competitors like Sony and Valve have already launched their year-end recaps.

Microsoft's Xbox division appears to be forgoing its annual 'Wrapped' feature for 2025, a personalized recap of users' gaming habits similar to Spotify's year-end summaries. According to Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, sources confirm that Xbox is not producing this recap this year. "My sources suggest that Xbox is not doing a 'Wrapped' this year. And there's potentially a good reason," Corden wrote.

The primary reason cited is a reallocation of marketing budgets toward significant milestones in 2026. Xbox itself marks its 25th anniversary, having launched as a brand on November 15, 2001. This coincides with Halo's 25th anniversary, Blizzard's 35th (founded in February 1991), and Bethesda's 40th (established in June 1986). "A lot of the 'marketing budget' that would've typically been allocated to something like an Xbox Wrapped is being poured into efforts to celebrate these major milestones for Xbox, its brands, and some of its games," Corden explained.

This decision unfolds against a backdrop of difficulties for Xbox in 2025, including thousands of layoffs, the cancellation of games such as The Initiative's Perfect Dark, Rare's Everwild, and an unannounced ZeniMax MMO, declining hardware sales, and struggles within the Call of Duty series.

Despite these setbacks, optimism persists for upcoming reveals. Microsoft's president of game content and studios, Matt Booty, announced that Xbox will host a Dev Direct stream in January 2026. "We've got more stuff coming up than we can fit in one show," Booty stated, hinting at updates for projects like the Fable reboot and the Forza Horizon series, alongside other Xbox Game Studios titles.

In contrast, Sony's 2025 Wrap-Up and Steam Replay 2025 are already available on their respective platforms.

Microsoft has announced its next Xbox Developer Direct showcase for January 22, 2026, featuring in-depth looks at Fable, Forza Horizon 6, and Game Freak's Beast of Reincarnation. The event will provide gameplay footage and new details on these upcoming 2026 titles. All three games will be available on Xbox Series X/S, with Beast of Reincarnation also launching on PS5 and PC via Game Pass.

Microsoft has opted out of its annual Xbox Wrapped recap for 2025, unlike competitors such as PlayStation and Steam. The decision appears tied to redirecting marketing efforts toward major anniversaries next year. Xbox's 25th, Blizzard's 35th, and Bethesda's 40th milestones are among the celebrations planned.

Microsoft's Xbox hardware struggled throughout 2025, marked by game cancellations, price hikes, and poor sales compared to Sony's PlayStation 5. The company shifted focus toward PC integration and multi-platform releases, raising questions about the future of dedicated Xbox consoles. Analysts suggest this year may signal the end of Xbox as a competitive console brand.

Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan has announced plans for more consistent releases of its games on PlayStation 5, addressing past irregularities in launch timings. The upcoming Fable reboot will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5, while Forza Horizon 6 will arrive on Sony's console later. This shift aims to broaden the audience for Xbox titles amid financial pressures.

Xbox Game Studios has yet to claim a Game of the Year award at The Game Awards. A upcoming title on Xbox Game Pass could change that trajectory in 2026. The game in question is positioned as a major headliner for the service.

A reliable leaker has indicated that Sony plans to hold its first State of Play event of 2026 in February, continuing the company's annual tradition. While no official date has been announced, the rumor aligns with past patterns of early-year broadcasts. Fans anticipate updates on upcoming titles amid a busy year for PlayStation.

Xbox has confirmed that the long-awaited Fable reboot from Playground Games will launch in fall 2026 on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Game Pass. The announcement, made during the Xbox Developer Direct on January 22, 2026, highlights a subjective morality system without character appearance changes, drawing mixed reactions from fans. This marks the series' return after Lionhead Studios' closure in 2016.
