Langton Gumira and his wife were among at least 74 Zimbabweans who left Mossel Bay in early June after violence killed three people. Gumira described being beaten during the unrest that began on 29 May.
Langton Gumira had lived in South Africa since 2006 and held a valid Zimbabwean Exemption Permit until May 2027. He worked as a restaurant manager in Mossel Bay and described the town as peaceful until the night of 29 May.
Gumira received warnings during his shift and moved between safe locations overnight. The next morning he was attacked by three men with knobkerries while returning from buying bread. He escaped after shouting for help.
By 9 June Gumira and his wife had returned to Zimbabwe with only their clothes. He told Daily Maverick they now have no money or property and are staying with family in Harare.
