Artifacts seized by Britain during the Battle of Maqdala have been returned to Ethiopia today, 158 years later. The items include Emperor Tewodros's lock of hair, pieces of clothing and a gold bracelet.
Addis Ababa, May 14, 2026. Abebaw Ayalew, director general of the Ethiopian Heritage Protection Authority, said the return forms part of efforts to restore Ethiopia's historical and cultural traces.
The artifacts had remained abroad for many years and stand as major witnesses to Ethiopia's ancient civilization and sovereignty.
Their return is viewed as a major chapter showing Ethiopia's historical ownership and diplomatic success.
