Atlas Renewable Energy inaugurates Shangri-La solar park in Tolima

Atlas Renewable Energy officially inaugurated the Shangri-La Solar Park in Ibagué, Tolima, its first project in Colombia. With a capacity of 201 MWp, it will generate 403.7 GWh per year, enough for over 214,000 households. The project aids the energy transition by avoiding 161,000 tons of CO₂ annually.

Atlas Renewable Energy, an international renewable energy company, brought the Shangri-La Solar Park into operation, located in Ibagué, Tolima department. This project marks the expansion of large-scale solar energy in Colombia and strengthens a more sustainable energy system.

The park has an installed capacity of 201 MWp and will produce approximately 403.7 GWh of energy per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 214,000 Colombian households. It will also avoid emissions of nearly 161,000 tons of CO₂ each year, comparable to removing around 34,000 vehicles from circulation for a year.

Rubén Borja, Country Manager of Atlas Renewable Energy in Colombia, stated: “The launch of Shangri-La marks a firm step in Colombia's energy transition. This project not only delivers clean and reliable energy to the national system but has also been a driver of employment, training, and development for Tolima communities. We are proud to have built in record time an infrastructure that boosts regional progress and reinforces Atlas's commitment to the country's energy security”.

During construction, over 65% of jobs were generated in Tolima, prioritizing local hiring, and women's participation reached 22%, exceeding targets in technical and operational roles. The company promoted the “We Are Part of the Same Energy” program to foster labor inclusion and skill development in local communities, while strengthening social infrastructure.

Shangri-La is part of an alliance with Isagen to develop, build, and operate 1,000 MW of solar projects in the coming years, contributing to decarbonization in Colombia.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Edwin Palma, celebrated: “I wish to express my recognition and gratitude for the effort in this project: the financing, its structuring, and especially the human work of the managerial and operational teams, as well as the collaboration of the banking sector and local authorities. I congratulate all those who made this great clean energy project possible”.
