For the first time in tournament history, the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals will be played without Brazil, Germany or Italy. Brazil fell in the round of 16 to Norway, Germany lost on penalties to Paraguay and Italy failed to qualify.
Brazil was the last to exit after losing in the round of 16 to Norway. Germany was also eliminated at that stage after falling on penalties to Paraguay.
Italy did not even qualify for the tournament. Between the three teams they hold 13 World Cup titles, with Brazil leading the all-time list with five wins and Germany and Italy with four each.
With these giants gone, the path is open for other teams. Sides such as France, Spain, England, Argentina, Colombia, Morocco, Norway and Portugal remain in contention.
