Cacique Raoni Metuktire, 93, underwent intestinal obstruction surgery on Saturday afternoon (20) at Hospital São Paulo, part of UNIFESP. The procedure was completed without complications and the indigenous leader remains in the ICU in stable condition.
Raoni was transferred on Friday morning (19) from Sinop, in northern Mato Grosso, to the hospital in São Paulo. He had initially been admitted to Hospital e Maternidade Dois Pinheiros after symptoms including vomiting, cough and abdominal pain that began on Saturday (13).
Upon arrival in São Paulo, the cacique presented with intestinal obstruction, dehydration and aspiration pneumonia. The surgery was performed using a minimally invasive technique, according to the hospital's medical bulletin.
Raoni will receive antibiotic therapy and clinical support in the ICU. He had undergone recent hospitalizations at the same Mato Grosso hospital, including a discharge less than a month ago.
