Carlos Sainz puts F1 future on hold until summer break

Williams driver Carlos Sainz says he will not seriously consider his Formula 1 options beyond the end of his contract until after the summer break. The Spaniard, who joined the team from Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season, wants to focus fully on improving the current car.

Sainz, whose deal with Williams runs until the close of 2026, told reporters he has instructed his team to give him space until the break. He cited heavy simulator work and meetings as reasons to delay any talks about rival seats.

The 2026 Williams car has started the season overweight and uncompetitive. Sainz said his priority remains helping the Grove squad return to race-winning form.

Team principal James Vowles confirmed a medium-sized update package will arrive at this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Further changes are planned for Spa, Budapest and Zandvoort, with an almost entirely new car expected by the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September.

Sainz added that he has asked his management to keep contract discussions to a minimum for now so he can concentrate on the team’s recovery.
