Christian Streich misses perspective from the trainer's bench

Two years after stepping down as SC Freiburg coach, Christian Streich misses the view from the touchline. In an RTL/n-tv interview, the 60-year-old described how strange it feels to watch games from the stands. He also praised his successor Julian Schuster.

Christian Streich, who coached SC Freiburg's first team from 2012 to 2024, has not yet adjusted to the spectator's view after two years. "It is strange to see the game from high up in the stands," the 60-year-old told RTL/n-tv. "I wasn't used to that for 30 years. I'd love to sit on the bench below, disguised so no one recognizes me, and watch from there."

Active in Freiburg since 1995, he is slowly getting used to sitting in the stands. Streich praised Julian Schuster, his former captain and current coach: "He has shaped the team superbly. That doesn't surprise me." He was "very happy" that Schuster took over.

Under Schuster, Freiburg recently reached the Europa League quarterfinals, the provisional highlight. On Thursday, the club faces Celta Vigo (6:45 p.m. RTL) aiming for the first semifinal in its history.
