David Simpson and Pjotr Van De Kruishove claimed victory in the 2026 Hickstead Derby trial on 19 June. The 2023 champions prevailed in a four-way jump-off after six riders posted clear rounds. The result sets the stage for the main Al Shira’aa Derby on 21 June.
Six combinations cleared the course in the Agria Derby trial, an uncommon occurrence at Hickstead. Former winners Guy Williams and William Whitaker withdrew, leaving Alex Bragg, Derek McCoppin, Stephan Dubsky and David Simpson to contest the jump-off.
Simpson delivered a clear round in 58.24 seconds aboard the 11-year-old stallion. Stephan Dubsky posted the fastest time of 57.87 seconds but incurred faults, while Alex Bragg finished clear in 64 seconds. Derek McCoppin recorded four faults.
Simpson described the horse’s recent form as strong following performances in Hamburg and St Gallen. He expressed hope of replicating the trial success in Sunday’s Derby, scheduled to start at 3pm.
Alex Bragg praised Simpson’s preparation help and outlined adjustments planned for the bank and crowd atmosphere ahead of the final.
