A serious accident occurred at a level crossing in Bad Saulgau, in the Sigmaringen district. A car driver proceeded onto the tracks, secured by an Andreaskreuz sign, despite a flashing red light. His vehicle was hit by an approaching passenger train and dragged about 250 meters. The driver succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene.
Police reported that the warning signals were disregarded. Around a hundred passengers on the train escaped unharmed. Emergency services, including firefighters and pastoral care workers, responded to the site. The rail line was closed for several hours to secure and investigate the incident.
Damage to the train and the car amounted to tens of thousands of euros. The exact cause is under further investigation, but initial findings point to negligence by the driver. Such incidents highlight the critical need to heed level crossing warnings to prevent loss of life.
