EAC schedules urgent meeting to coordinate Ebola response across member states

Health ministers from eight East African Community states will meet virtually on June 1 and 2 to address the Ebola outbreak. The session follows reports of over 130 deaths and more than 1,000 cases in the region.

The East African Community announced the Extra-Ordinary Virtual Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for Health. It will focus on cross-border surveillance, rapid response systems, and aligned health protocols.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, affects the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. The EAC Secretariat noted prior coordination efforts by disease experts.

The meeting occurs as Kenya faces public concerns over a planned quarantine facility for exposed American citizens. A court suspended the project, though the government sees progress after the United States pledged KSh 1.7 billion.
