Estranged husband convicted in Iowa kennel murder

Angela Prichard was fatally shot by her estranged husband at the Mississippi Ridge Kennels in Bellevue, Iowa, on October 8, 2022. She identified him during a 911 call moments before her death.

Christopher Prichard waited inside the kennel after arriving around 4 a.m. Surveillance audio captured dogs barking at that time, which investigators used to establish his arrival. Angela Prichard arrived at 7:34 a.m. and was shot less than six minutes later.

She called 911 and was heard saying "please get out" and naming "Chris" before a gunshot sounded. Prichard was arrested about 16 hours later after hiding in nearby woods and staying briefly with acquaintances.

He was convicted of first-degree murder and robbery in February 2024. In March 2024 he received a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Angela Prichard's family sued the City of Bellevue and three officers, alleging failure to enforce a restraining order. A federal judge dismissed the case in January 2025. The family is appealing.
