Florida man indicted for toddler's murder and grandparents' shooting

Clifford Long, a 37-year-old man from Florida, faces first-degree murder charges for killing 3-year-old Bles'Syn Lightner and attempting to murder her grandparents during a home shooting in Melbourne. Police responded to the incident on August 29 at a residence on the 900 block of Poplar Lane. The male victim identified Long as the shooter, describing him as a tall, thin, light-skinned Black male with a head shaped like a football.

Officers arrived around 10:40 p.m. to find a 48-year-old woman and 54-year-old man with gunshot wounds; both were seriously injured but conscious. Bles'Syn was discovered in a bedroom with a fatal gunshot wound to her forehead and pronounced dead at the scene. Four other adults and two children were present but unharmed. The girl's parents were at a concert, while she lived with her grandparents at the home; she had celebrated her birthday four days earlier. There were no initial signs of forced entry, and victims initially denied knowing the shooter. According to the probable cause arrest affidavit, the grandfather later identified Clifford Long, known as 'Goof,' as the gunman. He reported seeing Long shoot his granddaughter, then step over her body to fire at him. Long allegedly confessed to his brother that he killed the girl over money—saying 'They wouldn't come off that money'—possibly linked to robbery or drugs, but claimed he did not intend to kill Bles'Syn. About a week later, Long and his brother allegedly stabbed a homeless man over 30 times and severed his finger with a machete in a drug dispute. When questioned by police, Long denied involvement, claiming he was at a gas station and barely knew the family. He stated, 'To be honest with you, I didn't shed a tear but my condolences to the family.' Long has been held without bond in Brevard County Jail since September on the machete attack charge. His next court date is May 20.
