Frances Tiafoe beat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Terra Wortmann Open on Sunday. The victory made him the first American to win the ATP 500 event in Halle.
Tiafoe defeated top-ten opponents Flavio Cobolli, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Fritz during the tournament. He dropped just seven points on serve in the final.
After the match, Tiafoe quoted Romans 8:18 and said the pain from his French Open loss three weeks earlier could not compare to the joy of winning his biggest title. He added that he had lost many 500 finals before.
Fritz congratulated Tiafoe but joked that he did not like him right now because of the result. The two players are close friends.
Tiafoe will return to world No. 19 in the rankings on Monday and heads to Wimbledon next week.
