Building on debutant Arno Merk's opening victory, Germany's Gabriel Clemens kicked off strongly at London's Alexandra Palace. The 2023 semi-finalist downed US qualifier Alex Spellman 3-0 in sets late Thursday, highlighted by a superb 170-point finish in the opener.
Eight Germans are in the field; next are Lukas Wenig (Sunday) and Max Hopp (Monday). Clemens faces Dutchman Wessel Nijman next, after Nijman's 3-0 win over Karel Sedlacek.
Elsewhere, Singapore's Paul Lim, 71 and back after three years, beat Swede Jeffrey de Graaf 3-1 and drew crowd cheers. 'I felt the crowd on my side—maybe my personality,' Lim said, eyeing a clash with world No. 2 Luke Humphries. Scottish star Gary Anderson survived 3-2 against Adam Hunt.
