Heavy rain causes road cave-ins and traffic chaos in Gurugram

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon brought Gurugram to a standstill, with a school bus sinking into a caved-in road and a section of National Highway-48 collapsing near Narsinghpur.

The city recorded up to 82 mm of rain between 2 PM and 5 PM on Tuesday. A school bus carrying children got stuck near Sector 53 when the road caved in, requiring nearly an hour for sanitation workers and police to free it.

A portion of NH-48 on the Delhi-Jaipur carriageway collapsed near Narsinghpur due to ongoing pipe culvert works by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority. Authorities diverted traffic via the Dwarka Expressway and Southern Peripheral Road, while the National Highways Authority of India closed two lanes as a precaution.

Residents voiced frustration over persistent waterlogging. Chaitali Mandhotra of Ardee City said, “Thank you Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) for cleaning the funds and not the drains.” Ruchika Sethi of Nirvana Country added that the city deserves better infrastructure.

Officials from MCG, GMDA and NHAI stated that teams used pumps and other equipment to clear water, describing disruption as minimal in many areas and pledging round-the-clock monitoring.
