Hong Kong’s cinema market saw box office revenues climb 25 percent in the first half of 2026. Total takings reached $84.7 million from January 1 to June 30, up from $67.7 million in the same period last year.
Edko Films’ comedy drama Night King led the market with $15 million. The Lunar New Year release stars Dayo Wong and Sammi Cheng and was directed by Jack Ng.
Cold War 1994, a crime thriller prequel also from Edko Films, placed second among local titles with $4.8 million after opening on May 1. It was directed by Longman Leung and features Chow Yun-fat, Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung Ka-fai and Louis Koo.
Avatar: Fire and Ash was the top foreign film with $5 million, followed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at $4.7 million. Other notable local releases included The Snowball on a Sunny Day, We’re Nothing at All and Ciao UFO.
The Motion Picture Industry Association reported that 142 films were released in the period, including 17 local productions. Local film receipts rose 40 percent year on year. Chairman Crucindo Hung said the summer season and second half of the year could sustain the momentum.
