Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced on Wednesday that Hong Kong will organise events across all 18 districts to mark the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party’s founding.
John Lee Ka-chiu said at a launch ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre that the events aim to enhance residents’ understanding of the country’s achievements under the Communist Party and to foster patriotism, especially among the youth.
The activities will cover themes including aerospace development and the green transition. Officials watched a live stream of a Beijing gathering before the announcement, where President Xi Jinping delivered a speech.
Zhou Ji, director of Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong, said the activities hold historical and realistic significance, with the central government holding high expectations for the city in the first year of the national 15th Five-Year Plan.
Analysts noted that greater social and political stability now allows for such high-profile events.
