Indigenous leader Raoni Metuktire, 93, showed progressive clinical improvement over the past 24 hours, according to a medical bulletin released on Monday. He remains in the ICU at Hospital Dois Pinheiros in Sinop, Mato Grosso, with no fever and better diet acceptance.
The hospital stated that the chief's clinical condition has remained stable with no complications since readmission on Thursday after a new episode of malaise. Raoni had already spent five days in the same unit in early May to treat abdominal pain linked to a hernia.
Doctors have diagnosed the leader with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart problems. On May 7, the Raoni Institute suspended his public schedule to allow necessary care and peaceful recovery.
Born in the Kapot village in Mato Grosso, Raoni is recognized worldwide for defending the Amazon and indigenous peoples. He gained prominence in the 1970s opposing the Transamazonica highway and, after meeting musician Sting in 1989, undertook global travels to protect the forest.
