An international tribunal ruled that the pine and eucalyptus plantation model in Corrientes amounts to an ecocide. The sentence follows a November 2024 visit and public hearing testimony.
The International Tribunal on the Rights of Nature issued its final verdict after touring affected areas and hearing from residents and experts. It recognized that the forestry model violates the rights of nature and people, with complicity from national, provincial and municipal governments.
The sentence states that the plantations are not forests but monocultures that deplete water and soil, promote fires and receive subsidies and certifications despite their impacts. It also declares grasslands and wetlands as subjects of rights.
The ruling condemns slave and child labor in the forestry chain and rejects carbon credits as false solutions. Local groups such as Defensores del Pastizal drove the complaint that led to this resolution.
