Apple will provide iOS 27 to the iPhone 11 series, first released in 2019. The update marks eight years of software support for those devices. It comes as users increasingly opt for older phones amid rising costs.
The announcement was made at WWDC 2026. iOS 27 will reach the iPhone 11 lineup even though these models are unlikely to gain Apple Intelligence features.
Higher electronics prices have pushed many buyers toward refurbished devices. A CNET poll found that over 48 percent of adults have considered such purchases, mainly due to cost.
Apple has also issued updates to keep services like iMessage and FaceTime running on even older hardware. Entry-level new iPhones now start at $600, while an iPhone 11 with 256 GB storage sells for $209 on the second-hand market.
The company has historically offered several years of security updates after ending full iOS support. This approach may help retain users in its ecosystem as competitors offer lower-priced Android options.
