Kd considers hijab ban after burka prohibition

The Christian Democrats' congress in Linköping voted in favor of banning burkas and niqabs in public spaces, including other face coverings. Party leader Ebba Busch views the ban as a way to counter women's oppression. A top politician opens the door to discussing a hijab ban in the future.

On Friday, November 14, 2025, the Christian Democrats' (KD) national congress in Linköping voted in favor of banning burkas and niqabs in public spaces. The proposal, part of a program with over 60 points to strengthen societal community, also includes "other face coverings." The vote ended 140 in favor and 128 against, despite the party board's opposition to the addition.

Health Minister Elisabeth Lann argued against the broadening, saying: "This is not about value-neutral garments." She stated that burkas and niqabs cannot be compared to a buff against the cold. Party leader Ebba Busch described the burka as "the ultimate form of women's oppression" and believes the ban can be implemented with the Tidö parties if they win the election. "One must be aware that it sends reverse signals," she said.

No opponents were heard in the debate. Max Pelin from KD's youth league called the burka "an anomaly in Swedish society." The purpose of the broader proposal is to avoid discussions about restricting religious freedom.

After the vote, KD's EU parliamentarian Alice Teodorescu Måwe commented that a hijab ban is not excluded. "One should never exclude anything, and I think it's important for politicians to always be attuned to societal development," she said. She added: "Nothing is ever excluded." Teodorescu Måwe described the issue as difficult, involving aspects of both religious freedom and honor culture. "This is just the beginning of a discussion to ensure that people in Sweden are free to make their own choices," she continued.

The program also includes proposals for "sound patriotism," support for associations, and civil defense training for youth. KD already advocates a ban on burkas and niqabs for public employees.

What people are saying

Discussions on X about KD's burka and niqab ban in public spaces, led by Ebba Busch, show strong support from conservative and KD-affiliated users who see it as defending women's rights and Swedish values against oppression. Critics from left-leaning accounts dismiss it as a distraction from issues like unemployment and global conflicts. Skeptical voices question its impact on broader Islamization concerns. Mentions of a potential future hijab ban are sparse, with focus remaining on burkas and niqabs. High-engagement posts from politicians, journalists, and public figures highlight diverse sentiments including approval, opposition, and calls for stronger measures.
