Kentucky teen charged in fatal ATV crash

A 16-year-old girl in Kentucky faces a driving under the influence charge after an all-terrain vehicle crash that killed her best friend. The incident occurred on February 28 in Vicco, leaving another passenger severely injured. Authorities believe alcohol played a role in the accident.

On February 28, around 9 p.m., an ATV carrying three teenagers veered off Oakwood Avenue in Vicco, Kentucky, and plunged over an embankment. The crash resulted in the death of 16-year-old Emilynn Clark, a sophomore at Perry County Central High School, while another passenger sustained severe injuries. The driver, also 16 and identified by authorities as Clark's best friend, has been charged with one count of driving under the influence, according to the Perry County Sheriff's Department.

Perry County Sheriff Joe Engle described the community's grief in statements to local media. "A lot of people hurting, high school kids — the whole school and community is mourning the loss of a fantastic young lady," Engle said. He noted the emotional toll, adding, "Clark was best friends with the other girl that survived, so there's a lot of people dealing with a lot of emotions and heartbreak right now." Engle also stated, "We do believe alcohol to be a factor in this."

An online fundraiser on GoFundMe, set up by Clark's uncle for funeral expenses and a memorial, highlighted her vibrant personality. "She was loved by everyone who knew her and for her infectious smile," the post read. "She enjoyed sports such as playing volleyball and basketball."

The investigation continues with several elements under review. A blood sample from the scene is being tested, and deputies are examining surveillance video from nearby businesses to identify who purchased the alcohol. Two search warrants have been executed, including one for the cell phone of Noah Back, the ATV's owner; the phone will be analyzed in a separate probe. Initially, charges were described as pending against two adult men, but Engle clarified this refers to potential additional charges, such as vehicular homicide or manslaughter, pending prosecutorial guidance.

Parallel inquiries are underway by social services and the Perry County School District. The school issued a statement expressing sorrow: "It is with the deepest sadness we have learned one of our students at Perry County Central High School was tragically killed in an ATV accident Saturday evening. Our hearts are broken for the student's family, her friends, and our Commodore family…Please keep this family and others involved in your thoughts and prayers in the days to come."
