One man was hospitalized after being shot in the leg during clashes at a meeting to promote a Sh1 trillion nuclear plant project in Central Sakwa, Bondo, Siaya County.
The meeting took place on Friday afternoon at Ka’John Business Centre and was attended by officials from KenGen, the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) and MP Gideon Ochanda.
David Otieno Mboya from Lenya village said he was shot while passing nearby. He said residents threw stones while police fired shots in the air. He was taken to Nango Hospital and later transferred to Bondo Hospital.
Bondo Police Commander Peter Leparsare confirmed that police fired in the air to disperse the crowd after a clash between residents and the MP’s guards. No official report of a shooting had been filed by Friday night.
Residents oppose the project over fears of displacement and concerns about safety and compensation. The project was moved from Kilifi after facing opposition there. Siaya Governor James Orengo said its success depends on public participation and community consent.
