A postmortem examination has established that 16-year-old Silvester Muigai died from a single gunshot wound to the head during protests in Nanyuki on June 9.
Authorities in Kenya said the bullet recovered from the student’s skull has been handed to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority for further investigation. Muigai, a Form Three student and the firstborn in a family of four, was described as an innocent bystander who joined demonstrators around 5:30 pm.
The protests in Nanyuki town later turned violent, with clashes between police and demonstrators. Muigai’s single mother, who lost her home in a fire late last year, is appealing for financial and material support while calling for justice.
A relative told NTV on June 11 that Muigai had been advised not to attend school because of the demonstrations. Investigations into the shooting are continuing.
