Megan Thee Stallion will make her Broadway debut as Zidler in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, running for eight weeks from March 24 to May 17. The rapper takes on the role of the nightclub owner and show's narrator, marking the first time a female-presenting actor has played the part. The production, based on Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film, is set to close on July 26, 2026, after 2,289 performances.
Megan Thee Stallion announced on February 26 that she will join the cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York. She will portray Zidler, the proprietor of the Moulin Rouge cabaret and the production's de facto narrator, for performances from March 24 to May 17, except for May 2. This eight-week stint represents her first appearance on Broadway.
The role of Zidler, originally Harold Zidler in the 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann and played by Jim Broadbent, has been depicted as a gay man in the Broadway version. It was originated by Danny Burstein, who won a Tony Award, and subsequently performed by actors including Tituss Burgess, Boy George, Wayne Brady, and Bob the Drag Queen. Megan Thee Stallion is the first female-presenting person to take on the character.
A statement from the production indicates that a hint of Megan Thee Stallion's music will be incorporated into the jukebox score, which features 70 songs from artists such as the Rolling Stones, Outkast, and Britney Spears. The musical, directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers with music supervision by Tony Award winner Justin Levine, opened in July 2018.
