The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has expressed fears that some of its members are being targeted ahead of South Africa's November local government elections.
Party Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo spoke to supporters outside Durban City Hall on Wednesday following a march through the city. The protest, which began at Currie's Fountain Stadium, highlighted complaints about poor service delivery, alleged corruption and failing infrastructure in the eThekwini Municipality. Nomvalo told the crowd that the party had written to Crime Intelligence head General Khumalo asking for more police visibility in KwaZulu-Natal. He accused elements within the ANC of plotting against MKP members and stressed the need for safe campaigning. We wrote a letter to the head of Crime Intelligence General Khumalo requesting increased police visibility across KwaZulu-Natal because we know that these criminals of the ANC are plotting to kill our comrades, Nomvalo said. We are saying for elections to be free and fair, comrades must go to campaign without any fear of prejudice and without fear of victimization.
