A hiker died on Saturday after falling nearly 200 meters on Calbuco volcano in Reserva Nacional Llanquihue. CONAF urged visitors to plan carefully and use proper equipment.
The mountaineer was descending through the El Canalón sector on the volcano’s west side when the accident occurred. His companion alerted Carabineros, triggering a rescue operation supported by a Chilean Air Force helicopter and GOPE personnel to recover the body.
Fernando Gebhard, CONAF’s regional director for Los Lagos, recommended that hikers plan visits to national parks and reserves, especially in high-mountain zones. He stressed the need to carry crampons, an ice axe, a helmet and suitable technical clothing.
Gebhard said visitors should always travel in a rope team of at least two experienced people. He also advised checking current area conditions and required permits, or hiring certified guides when lacking experience.
CONAF noted that these measures protect both human life and Chile’s natural heritage and emphasized acting responsibly in protected areas.
