Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7, portraying the character as a mother confronting past traumas. The film marks a full-circle moment more than 30 years after Sidney's mother's murder. Campbell explains how Sidney heals old wounds while protecting her family.
Neve Campbell reprises her role as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7, which premieres in theaters on February 27. After opting out of the previous installment, Campbell's return brings Sidney into a new phase of life as a mother to daughter Tatum, played by Isabel May.
In an interview with TotalFilm, Campbell described the storyline as “a whole full-circle story for Sidney.” She highlighted the character's trauma tied to her mother, Maureen Prescott, stating, “There’s a lot of trauma around her motherhood and her mother. She’s made the very brave choice to have children herself. And she’s made this decision, she wants to live in this small town, have a family, and overcome her past.”
Sidney's fears materialize as threats reach her family, but the narrative allows her to “sort of heal that wound,” according to Campbell.
The original Scream (1996) introduced Sidney one year after Maureen's murder, with killers Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) motivated by an affair involving Maureen's relationship with Billy's father. Maureen's backstory expanded in Scream 3 (2000), where her abandoned son Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) launches a killing spree, with implications of her past struggles in Hollywood, including a suggestion of rape during her acting aspirations.
Scream 7 features returning cast members including Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. New additions are Joel McHale, Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry.
