Nick Waterman and Meg Washington set musical feature Rosaleen

Filmmakers Nick Waterman and Meg Washington have announced their next project, a romantic musical feature titled Rosaleen. The film, produced by Schuyler Weiss, draws from the forbidden love affair between artist Rosaleen Norton and conductor Sir Eugene Goossens in 1950s Sydney. It explores the story behind the Sydney Opera House's creation.

Nick Waterman and Meg Washington, known for their collaboration on the feature film How to Make Gravy, are developing Rosaleen through their production company, Speech&Drama Pictures. Waterman will direct, write, and produce, while Washington will write, produce, and compose the music. Schuyler Weiss, who produced How to Make Gravy and worked on Elvis, joins as producer on this project announced on April 1, 2026, as covered by Deadline Hollywood. The story centers on Rosaleen Norton, dubbed the 'Witch of Kings Cross,' and Sir Eugene Goossens, the British conductor who led the Sydney Opera House project during his peak fame. Their relationship, set against 1950s Sydney, uncovers a hidden chapter of Australian history. Waterman and Washington stated, “This forgotten true story is made for the cinema – we’re excited to bring this extraordinary chapter of Australian history out of the shadows and into the spotlight.” Washington previously contributed original songs to The Deb, directed by Rebel Wilson, which closed the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
