Nine people died in two separate road accidents in Kenya on the night of December 24, 2025, as the world celebrated Christmas. One crash occurred at Mukhonje in Lugari constituency on the Eldoret-Webuye highway, and the other at Sachangwan in Nakuru County. More than 15 others suffered severe injuries and are receiving treatment in hospitals.
On the night leading into Wednesday, December 24, 2025, a severe road accident occurred at the Mukhonje business center in Lugari constituency on the Eldoret-Webuye highway. A matatu heading to Webuye from Eldoret collided with a lorry transporting fertilizer, resulting in eight deaths and seven severe injuries. Locals and vehicle owners joined efforts to assist the victims, while witnesses described the lorry as having veered off the road.
In a second incident at Sachangwan on the Nakuru-Eldoret road, two people died, including the lorry driver and one passenger. The crash involved five vehicles, including a Nissan matatu carrying passengers from Eldoret. More than ten were injured or killed, with others continuing treatment at Molo Sub-County Hospital, the Referral Hospital, and Nakuru Training Hospital.
Nakuru County Traffic Police Commander Allan Ogolla stated, "The lorry driver was heading to Nakuru and failed to control the vehicle. He died on the spot, and a passenger succumbed to injuries." Ogolla added that the injured were rushed to hospitals, and the involved vehicles were towed to Molo Police Station.
Witness James Kinuthia said, "The lorry driver was speeding before the accident happened. That's why it was very difficult for him to control it." Police and Red Cross workers aided the rescue, and the incident disrupted traffic on the busy road.
Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan urged drivers to follow traffic rules. "More police and NTSA officers have been deployed... I urge everyone to be disciplined on the roads, and every road user's life must be protected," Hassan said.
