Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has announced a crackdown on matatu operators following recent fatal incidents. The move comes after the death of a student pushed from a moving vehicle.
Inspector General Douglas Kanja made the announcement on June 17 while commissioning a new administration block at Kiamumbi Police Station in Nairobi.
He stated that matatu operators must operate within the law or face consequences. Kanja said authorities have arrested suspects linked to the death of Eugene Mutuku, a Kenya Medical Training College student pushed from a Nicco SACCO matatu.
Kanja added that more suspects are being tracked by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. The announcement follows an earlier crash involving a matatu named Detat on June 3 that killed five to seven people.
The National Transport and Safety Authority reported an 11 per cent rise in road accidents and fatalities. It plans nationwide driver retests starting next month.
