OpenAI launches ChatGPT Library for file storage

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Library, allowing paid users to store, search and retrieve files uploaded or created within the AI chatbot. The feature automatically saves documents from chats and provides a central searchable hub. Access requires a Plus, Pro or Business subscription costing at least $20 per month.

ChatGPT users with paid accounts can now manage their files through the new Library feature, OpenAI announced this week. Any documents, spreadsheets, presentations or images uploaded or generated in chats are automatically saved to the library when logged in. Users access it via a searchable left-hand sidebar, where they can filter by file type or origin—whether uploaded or AI-created—and pull files into conversations by selecting 'Add from Library' after clicking the plus sign in the chat window. The Memory feature can reference these files in future interactions if enabled. Supported files include documents up to 512MB and 2 million tokens, spreadsheets and CSVs at 50MB maximum, and images at 20MB. Generated images remain in a separate Images tab. Files require an internet connection to view, and deletion initiates a process where OpenAI removes them within 30 days, barring security, legal or de-identification needs. This rollout comes amid OpenAI's push into coding and productivity tools. The company recently enhanced models for faster code debugging to compete with offerings like Anthropic's Claude Code. Executives discussed a potential 'superapp' desktop interface combining ChatGPT, the coding platform Codex and AI-assisted browser Atlas. Separately, OpenAI plans to shut down its Sora video generation app to focus on these areas.
