Parents of students at Utumishi Girls' Academy have opposed the planned reopening of the school starting June 30. They demand safety guarantees following a dormitory fire that killed 16 students. The parents issued their demands in a letter sent on June 27.
The parents addressed their letter to the school and the Director of Education in Nakuru County. They called for a comprehensive safety inspection of all facilities, professional counselling for students, administrative accountability for the fire, and details on emergency preparedness measures such as exits and door-locking procedures.
The parents gave the school administration a 24-hour ultimatum to respond. They warned that without meaningful engagement, they will not allow their daughters to return.
The school administration has scheduled a phased reopening. Form Four students are to report on June 30, Grade 10 students on July 2, and Form Three students on July 4. The school closed on May 28 following the incident.
