Peter Gabriel has revealed plans for his new album o/i, set for release throughout 2026 in sync with the full moon cycle. The lead single, "Been Undone," arrives on January 3 alongside the Wolf Moon. This follows the innovative rollout of his 2023 album i/o, marking another chapter in his exploratory songwriting.
Peter Gabriel, the former Genesis frontman and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, ended fans' long wait for new music by announcing his upcoming album o/i on January 2, 2026. Building on the lunar-themed release strategy of his 2023 album i/o—which came after a 21-year gap since 2002's Up—Gabriel plans to unveil one song per full moon, starting with the debut single "Been Undone" on January 3. The full album will be complete by December 23, coinciding with the Cold Moon.
Each track will feature dual mixes: the "Bright-Side Mix" by producer Mark 'Spike' Stent and the "Dark-Side Mix" by Tchad Blake, with some sources indicating releases aligned to both full and new moons. "Been Undone" was recorded at Real World Studios in Bath and The Beehive in London.
In a statement, Gabriel described the songs as "a mix of thoughts and feelings." He elaborated on themes of the future: "We are sliding into a period of transition like no other, most likely triggered in three waves; AI, quantum computing and the brain computer interface. Artists have a role to look into the mists and, when they catch sight of something, to hold up a mirror." He characterized the album as "my lumpy bits—i/o: the inside has a new way out and o/i: the outside has a new way in," emphasizing human connection to nature and ongoing explorations like his "brain project."
Complementing the music, each song pairs with original artwork. The single "Been Undone" debuts with Ciclotrama 156 (Palindrome) by São Paulo-based artist Janaina Mello Landini. Gabriel praised her contribution: "The way she takes the rope and moves it out, unravelling it, is almost like fractals or tree trunks and looks like the brain in some ways too."
No touring plans for o/i have been announced, though Gabriel's 2023 i/o promotion included arena shows across Europe and North America featuring classics like "Solsbury Hill" and "In Your Eyes."
