Police closed Bergsgatan in Malmö half an hour earlier than usual on Friday evening due to disturbances from student celebrations.
The street was closed at 22.30 instead of the usual time at 23. Residents have complained for several days about honking cars, fireworks and loud noise.
One resident described the situation as riots and questioned how police could allow it. Others noted that fireworks scared children and pets.
Police deputy operations leader Johan Sjövall said resources are limited and that they had issued fines. He advised residents to stay indoors and call police if problems arise.
The street is normally closed every summer between 23 and 05 to reduce traffic disturbances.
