Security officers in Mandera County repelled a suspected al-Shabaab attack on a border police unit on Monday evening. The incident occurred at the Sheikhbarrow Border Police Unit in Lafey Sub-County around 6:45 pm. No casualties were reported.
The attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun fire against the unit. Security personnel responded with an exchange of fire that lasted at least 10 minutes, pushing the militants back.
Following the attack, anti-terror personnel conducted a clearance operation. They recovered communication devices, uniforms and ammunition linked to al-Shabaab from the area. The materials were secured for further examination.
The incident has heightened security concerns in northeastern Kenya. Mandera County has faced repeated threats from al-Shabaab militants crossing the border from Somalia.
