Senate approves facilitated CNH renewal requiring mandatory medical exam

The Senate approved on Tuesday a provisional measure that facilitates renewal of the National Driver's License for drivers without recent infractions while keeping the medical exam requirement.

The Senate plenary symbolically approved the provisional measure issued in December by the Lula government. The text exempts drivers without infractions in the last 12 months from Detran fees and in-person attendance, provided they choose the digital CNH version.

The original proposal foresaw automatic and free renewal without an exam, but Congress added the medical exam requirement after lobbying by the medical sector. Rapporteur Renan Filho (MDB-AL) accepted an amendment to restore this obligation.

From December to March, more than 1.5 million CNHs had already been renewed automatically. The measure now goes to presidential sanction and prevents the expiration scheduled for the 19th.
