Signs of Laylat al-Qadr according to hadith

Laylat al-Qadr is a special night in Ramadan better than a thousand months, encouraging Muslims to increase worship in the last ten nights. Although its exact time is hidden by Allah SWT, Prophet Muhammad SAW provided guidance through natural signs like a bright and calm night. Hadith describe these features and the sunnah of diligent worship.

Signs of Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr is the most anticipated night for Muslims every Ramadan. This night is said to be better than a thousand months, so every Muslim strives to increase worship to attain its virtues. The hope of encountering this blessed night drives many to enliven the last ten nights with prayer, dhikr, and supplication.

Nevertheless, Allah SWT has concealed the exact time of Laylat al-Qadr's descent. No one knows precisely when it arrives. However, through Prophet Muhammad SAW, Muslims are given guidance on the accompanying natural signs and the practices that should be performed to not miss its nobility.

The companions once asked Prophet Muhammad SAW about the characteristics of Laylat al-Qadr. Translation: The Prophet Muhammad SAW was asked about the signs of Laylat al-Qadr, and he said: It is a night that is bright and luminous, its air neither hot nor cold, no clouds, no rain, no wind movement, no shooting stars. The sun rises the next morning bright but not glaring.

This hadith explains that Laylat al-Qadr is marked by a calm, cool, and clear night atmosphere. There are no weather disturbances or striking sky phenomena. Even, a recognizable sign is the sun rising the next morning appearing to shine softly, not dazzling.

Prophet's Diligence in the Last Ten Nights

Although Prophet Muhammad SAW was the chosen human guaranteed nobility, he remained diligent in worship upon entering the last ten nights of Ramadan. This testimony is narrated by Sayyidah Aisyah RA: "كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اذا دخل العشر احيا الليل وايقظ اهله وشد المئزر". Translation: When the Prophet Muhammad SAW entered the last ten nights of Ramadan, he would worship diligently and wake his family members.

This narration serves as strong evidence that diligent worship at the end of Ramadan is a highly recommended sunnah. The Prophet not only increased his personal worship but also encouraged his family to enliven those nights. This explanation is summarized from NU Online on Monday, March 2, 2026.
