Simon Åkerström signs one-year contract with Vasa Sport

AIK defenseman Simon Åkerström is leaving HockeyAllsvenskan for Finland's Liiga. The 31-year-old has agreed to a one-year deal with Vasa Sport ahead of the upcoming season.

Åkerström produced 37 points in the regular season for AIK in each of his two campaigns there. He added eight points in six playoff games this year before the team was eliminated by MoDo in the quarterfinals.

Vasa Sport will be his second Finnish club. He previously played 28 games for Ässät during the 2019/20 season. Across 430 HockeyAllsvenskan appearances he has recorded 200 points.

Vasa Sport sports chief Lauri Mikkola highlighted the defender's two-way ability. "Simon Åkerström is a large defenseman who has produced good points in HockeyAllsvenskan the last seasons," Mikkola said. Åkerström becomes the sixth Swede in the club's roster for next season.
