South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone on Monday to serve the remainder of her late brother Sen. Lindsey Graham's Senate term. The appointment came two days after the Republican senator's death at age 71.
McMaster made the announcement at a press conference, describing the move as a tribute to Graham. Nordone, who has served as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, accepted the role and said, "Lindsey has always been there for me and now I will be there for him."
President Donald Trump recommended Nordone on social media, calling the appointment a "fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly." Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Sen. Tim Scott also expressed support.
Nordone's term will end in January. Republicans will hold a special primary on Aug. 11 to select a nominee for the full six-year term beginning next year. Several South Carolina Republicans, including Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, have signaled interest in running.
The appointment makes Nordone the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
